Google TPUV4

Google has been trickling out information about the TPUv4 architecture for several years without being terribly specific about the feeds and speeds of the system. But we talked to some of the people behind the TPU effort and also poured over research papers and technical presentations to bring it all together to put together an overview of the four generations of TPU compute engines and the systems that make use of them. Where we could not find out information, we made what we reckon are intelligent guesses as is our habit.

Rust Linuxiin

Linuxissa otetaan käyttöön Rust. En ole Rustilla ohjelmoinut. C:llä ja C++:lla olen jonkun verran, siitä on tosin aikaa. Rustissahan automaatio on viety paljon pidemmälle kuin C:ssä. Erityisesti Rustissa on hyvä muistin varauksen automaatio. Itse tykkään kielistä, joissa on paljon automaatiota. Ei ohjelmoijan tule kaikkia pikkujuttuja itse hoitaa vaan koneen pitää hoitaa ne automaattisesti.

This week, Linux’s Benevolent Dictator For Life Linus Torvalds mentioned that the Rust programming language would be used in the upcoming Linux 6.1 kernel. Currently, the Linux kernel is at preview version 6.0-rc6 (codenamed “Hurr durr I’ma ninja sloth”) so we have a bit of time before we all have Rust powering the kernel, but the mere announcement is news-worthy. It’s the author’s opinion that this embrace of Rust at the very core of Linux will be a huge boost to the robotics community.

There are a few reasons for my optimism. First, let’s acknowledge that those in charge of the capital-K Linux Kernel have traditionally forbidden the use of any language other than good old-fashioned C; leaving those confines willingly is remarkable. This will do two important things for the community: start to relieve tech’s complete reliance on C as a programming protocol, and invite programmers who are Rust-forward to make a mark on Linux as a whole. After all, this movement has already started as Android incorporated Rust in 2021.

Arm iskee

But for new workloads, forget it. Arm will very quickly become the CPU of choice on the clouds and among the hyperscalers unless Intel radically cuts prices on Xeon SP CPUs. With a 30 percent to 40 percent price/performance advantage for equivalent performance for a cloud instance, why would you deploy on an X86 instance instead of an Arm instance? Perhaps you buy a Xeon SP – and a back generation one at that – because AMD is sold out of Epyc CPUs and that is all you can get?

Tietokone klassikkoja

Tietokoneita on ollut jo varsin kauan laajamittaisessa käytössä. Miljoonia kappaleita myyneitä tietokoneita on ollut ainakin 1980-luvulta lähtien. Aikanaan tietokoneet olivat varsin isoja ja kalliita. Hinnat tulivat sitten alas samalla kuin koko pieneni. 

Tietokoneiden toimintaperiaatteet ovat pysyneet pitkään samoina. Ainoastaan mahdollisesti optiset tietokoneet ja kvanttitietokoneet voisivat tuoda jotain todella uutta. Tekoälyprosessorit ovat yksi uudempi asia mutta nekin toimivat suurinpiirtein samalla lailla kuin muut tietokoneet. Tietokoneiden koossa on tapahtunut isoja muutoksia kun markkinoille on tullut kännykät, tabletit ja älykellot mutta nämäkin ovat suhteellisen lähellä perinteisiä tietokoneita. 

Aikanaan Suomen kansan tietokoneistuminen lähti liikkeelle Commodore 64:stä. Suomessa on ollut laajamittaista tietokoneen käyttöä jo lähemmäs 40-vuotta ja se on kantanut hedelmää valtavasti ja mahdollistanut nykyisen hyvinvoinnin. Linuxia ei pidä unohtaa, koska se on tehnyt tietokoneilusta varsin halpaa ja kiitos siitä kuuluu Linus Thorvaldsille ja kumppaneille. Linukselle pitäisi saada Helsinkiin ns. koodaripatsas.
