Aihe on ajankohtainen, sillä amerikkalainen NIST-standardointijärjestö julkaisi heinäkuussa ensimmäiset ehdokkaansa PQC-algoritmeiksi. PQC viittaa salaukseen, joka kestää kvanttikoneiden laskentatehon (post-quantum cryptography). Tehtävän hankaluutta kuvaa sekin, että yksi NIST:n voittajaksi julistamista algoritmeista ehdittiin jo murtaa.
Yksi kisassa mukana olleista (SIKE) osoittautui heikoksi.

Valtava kvanttiprosessori Ranskasta
Here's something we will only believe once we see it: A quantum computing chip the size of a large silicon wafer.
Paris-based quantum computing startup C12 Quantum Electronics is working on the multi-qubit chips in conjunction with CEA, the government-backed French research institution. CEA has an overall annual budget [PDF] of €5 billion and its own supercomputing bona fides, so at least the startup is getting some real research muscle behind it.
C12 said this new work is building from a "breakthrough in manufacturing quantum chips on 200mm silicon wafers." 200 millimeters equals roughly 7.8 inches in diameter, which is a very large surface on which to fabricate several qubits — short for quantum bits — the fundamental yet extremely delicate building blocks of quantum computers. Not many regular chip companies have even tried to make a wafer-size chip due to the multidimensional complexities involved. In recent memory, only Cerebras Systems comes to mind.
Sébastien Dauvé, CEO of the CEA-Leti lab, acknowledged the challenges ahead but said there is potential in combining C12's approach of making qubits using tiny carbon nanotubes with traditional CMOS processes used to fabricate wafers. They expect a "full final prototype" in 2024.

Suuret on suunnitelmat.

Kvanttitietokone - 5000 qbittiä
A quantum computer with over 5,000 qubits based on the principle of quantum annealing has been put into operation at Germany’s Forschungszentrum Jülich, one of the largest interdisciplinary research centers in Europe. This is the first system of its kind outside North America. It was created by the Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC) and D-Wave Systems. The new system, which has been installed in Jülich and will work closely with the JSC supercomputers, will be available to researchers across Europe.

Tulevaisuudessa kvanttitietokoneet voivat murtaa monet nykyteknologialla murtamattomat salaukset.
Nations and large companies, alike, are investing billions of dollars in quantum computing. While the technology promises to allow uncrackable communications, it also poses a likely threat to current digital infrastructure based on the latest encryption. Symmetric-key encryption, for example, could be cracked more easily using quantum computing, but it can be scaled up to larger key sizes to foil efforts. Public-key encryption, however, will almost certainly be broken by quantum computers in the future.
Such attacks will not be seen for at least five years and likely not a decade either, but they could pose a threat in 20 or 30 years, said Michele Mosca, CEO of evolutionQ, at last week's SecTor. About 83% of quantum-computing experts currently experimenting with the technology believe that breaking RSA-2048 encryption in less than 24 hours is a challenge that will not be solved in a decade, but the same percentage believe the milestone will be reached in less than 30 years, Mosca said.
